“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE PATRIOTS' FIRST TITLE November 10, 1963 ... The big game plan for the Patriots was to hold Lance Alworth to two touchdowns and let the offense keep riding the wave. Well, the defense did one better. They held him to one, but that was all the Chargers needed. Alworth’s lone touchdown in the third quarter on a pass from Tobin Rote, withstood several assaults, as San Diego topped the Patriots 7-6. It was defensive football at its best and it was offensive football at its poorest. Three times Boston fumbled away the football and three times Gino Cappelletti missed field goals. Add it up and you have the Patriots in third place, as both Houston and Buffalo won their games. The Patriots weren’t alone. The Chargers missed field goals also, and their running backs, Keith Lincoln and Paul Lowe could only manage 36 yards between them. |
