FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
November 20, 1964 ... Gino Cappelletti, the AFL scoring leader, added 10 more points to his total, by catching a 26-yard scoring pass from Babe Parilli and kicking a 50-yard field goal. It was another Hollywood type finish. This time the drama was supplied by Ross O'Hanley. O'Hanley intercepted what looked like a sure touchdown pass at the goal line to preserve a 12-7 Patriots' victory over the Broncos, keeping the title hopes alive. Denver second string quarterback, Mickey Slaughter, who had just come in to the game was picking apart the Boston secondary, and Lionel Taylor, the league's top receiver was loose on the goal line. Slaughter put one right into Taylor's arms. Then O'Hanley, who already had intercepted a Jacky Lee pass, came tearing over from the left and clipped the ball out of Taylor's mitts to give his team the victory it needed. The Patriots were 13-point favorites and had multiple opportunities to put this game away. But, as usual, they had to rely on Gino Cappelletti to bail them out. Cappy came through with 10 points, a touchdown, a conversion, and the longest field goal of his career. The other two point came from a safety in the opening moments. The offense could do no wrong out in the wide open field, but could do nothing when they got in the "red zone" and the goal line was nearby. The first time the Patriots had the ball, they took only seven plays to move the ball from their own 18-yard line to Denver's five, with Ron Burton making some great yardage and Tony Romeo coming up with a great catch. From there it took the Pats four plays to move the ball only three yards and Denver took over on their own two yard line. Jacky Lee dropped back to pass in his own end zone and was flattened by Jack Rudolph and Larry Eisenhauer for the safety. A few moments later the Patriots were down close again, when Lenny Moors intercepted Parilli's pass on the ten and rumbled down to Boston's 11-yard line. On the next play Lee hit Lionel Taylor in the end zone for Denver's only score. The Patriots, all season long, have handicapped themselves and scuttled back to take it all, and in five plays they were right back out in front on a march that began at their own 20. Cappy then caught a pass on the 10-yard line and should have been flattened right there, but he stepped back and let the defender fly by him. He scurried into the end zone and added the extra point to give his team a 9-7 lead. It was sloppy football from there on both sides of the ball. Cappy had missed a 40-yard attempt earlier in the game, but when the Patriots failed to move, Mike Holovak trotted out Cappy for a long 50-yard attempt. The kick just snuck over the cross bar to give Boston a 12-7 lead. Tommy Yewcic's precise punts, along with O'Hanley's two interception and one by Ron Hall were big factors in the Patriots' win. But in the end, again it was Cappelletti who was there again. This is the seventh game he has won and the Patriots have won only eight in total. |
