FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
November 8, 1941 ... The tough crew from Wake Forest rode into Fenway Park to tangle with the locals. The game see-sawed until the closing moments of the first half. The Eagles then drove 35, 75, 79 and 18 yards for scores. With 55 seconds left in the half, Ed Doherty dropped back and threw a strike to Charlie Furbush to draw first blood. The second half opened up in great fashion for the Eagle team. Frank Maznicki took the kickoff back 25 yards, and the went 52 yards on the first play from scrimmage. Mike Holovak added three yards before Teddy Williams snared Doherty's lateral and swept 20 yards around end for the second score.
Shortly thereafter the Eagles started another drive going 79 yards in 10 plays after jumping on a Wake Forest fumble. Doherty hit three consecutive passes to get the ball to the eight yard line. From there Dowdy Kissell deposited the ball in the end zone. Before the Eagles scored again, Wake Forest went 53 yards on five plays with Pete Horchak sneaking through the B.C. defensive line for a score. Wake Forest got the ball back but Red Cochran fumbled and Charlie Furbush recovered it to give B.C. the ball back at Wake Forest's 23-yd line. In two attempts Mike Holovak gave the Eagles their final touchdown and a 26-6 victory in game where 31 first downs had been registered by both teams, with B.C getting 235 yards rushing but losing the passing contest to Wake Forest's 147 yards. |
