Ernie Shore turns back the A's
April 13, 1916
...
The
Champs had little trouble with the Mackmen because of the erratic work of three
of their young pitchers and the splendid all-around pitching of Ernie Shore.
Shore got the A's out in order for the first five innings and finally gave up a
pair of runs in the sixth.
Mack's pitchers, first Carl Ray
and then Jack Richardson and Elmer Myers, did not have very much that bothered
the Red Sox. Ray and Richardson gave up four runs in the first inning to
the Red Sox, on three hits. Ernie Shore was wonderful in his first start,
with plenty of speed and pin-point control. The A's were at his mercy
except for one little hiccup, with the game totally in control by the Sox by
then. Former A's pitcher Herb Pennock came in to pitch in the seventh
inning and finished the game, passing three men in a row in the ninth inning
with two outs. |
