“DIARY OF A WINNER”

SAM JONES

BACK-TO-BACK WORLD SERIES CHAMPS

April 14, 1916 ... The game between the Red Sox and Athletics was called off shortly after noon by President Lannin.  The rain was coming down hard and fast and it was certain that the field would not be playable even if the sun had come out.

Bill Carrigan announced that Duffy Lewis is ready to play anytime and would have continued to play if Connie Mack had left Ray in the game.  The club received word that Sam Jones, one of the players in the Tris Speaker deal will arrive in Boston tomorrow.  The Red Sox have decided to take thirdbaseman Fred Thomas from Cleveland as the second player in the deal.  With the New Orleans Pelicans he batted ,265, with 15 doubles, 13 triples, and 11 home runs.
