“DIARY OF A WINNER”

MARTY McHALE

BACK-TO-BACK WORLD SERIES CHAMPS

April 23, 1916 ... In 40 minutes of play through a drizzling rain, the Red Sox won a five inning exhibition game against the Newark Indians, 4-0.  Marty McHale did the pitching and his battery mate, Hick Cady, a former Indian, was given a warm reception.

Christy Mathewson, in an interviews, thinks baseball should not be played in April because of the questionable weather, resulting in too many doubleheaders later in the year.  He thinks the 154 game scheduled could be condensed two weeks, and Sunday baseball should be allowed to be played in the states that don't allow it.
