Dutch Leonard shuts out Philly
April 24, 1916
...
Dutch Leonard put a crimp in the Athletics when he blanked them 4-0. Boston did not produce any more hits than Philly, but they were timely and good for a quartet of runs. Leonard was in great form and had great control, not issuing a pass until the last inning. He kept the
hits well scattered, which prevented him from getting into tight places. Brown University's, Minot Crowell, was on the mound for Connie Mack and pitched well enough to win the game, if his teammates were had been able to produce a run or two.
The Sox got the game winning runs in the second inning. Crowell started by passing Duffy Lewis, allowing a single to Larry Gardner, a sacrifice by Jack Barry, and a single by Bill Carrigan bringing the runners home. From that point on Crowell only
allowed one more man to reach first and that was Larry Gardner on a walk. Crowell eventually was taken out for a pinch hitter, but pitched a good game. Bill Carrigan was the star of the game, knocking in three of the Red Sox four runs. |
