Babe Ruth's was kind to Washington today, liberally handing out free passes and helping them to a 5 to 3 win over the Red Sox. He passed nine of the Nationals players and four of those gifts turned into runs. Opposed to Ruth was Harry Harper and
the crowd anticipated a great battle of the southpaws. Ruth's wildness however was a total surprise while Harper was steady but hit hard. Only brilliant fielding at critical stages saved him. Washington also tossed in a pair of doubleplays which killed promising Boston
rallies.
Babe was only hit hard in one inning and that was the second frame, when the Senators made every one of their hits count, bunching them with a walk and a sacrifice to produce two runs. The Red Sox rallied back in the third to take the lead, as Ruth
knocked in two runners with a line single for a 3-2 Red Sox lead. Babe settled down with the lead and allowed only two scattered hits. All of a sudden he developed a wild streak in the seventh inning, when with one out, he filled the bases. Dutch Leonard was brought in
to pitch at this point and John Henry greeted him with a base clearing double and ultimately won the game. |
