Red Sox lack the punch in their battle with the Nats
May 2, 1916
...
Washington was the team that played like champions today. Ernie Shore was hit all over the lot today much harder than the score shows. He was hit hard from the start climaxing with two doubles and a single in the sixth inning. Herb Pennock
then came in to relieve and he too was hit hard in the eighth. The Nats jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning by taking advantage of a wild throw by Larry Gardner on an easy ground ball, that resulted in a run. By the sixth inning they had 6-0 lead.
The Red Sox came back with four runs off Joe Boehling and these were a gift, for with two outs and the bases full, Joe Judge dropped an easy pop fly and two runners scored. The muff allowed the rest of the baserunners to score on hits by Dick Hoblitzell
and Duffy Lewis. |
