The Sox are unable to solve Dauss
June 6, 1916 ...
Hooks Dauss blanked the Red Sox 3-0 at Navin Field. He not only pitched shutout ball but held the Sox to three hits, two of which came in the ninth inning, fanning six. He sent them down in order in the first four innings, with the first Sox hit
coming in the fifth inning, with the next three men going out in order and again in the sixth and seventh innings. Tilly Walker was passed in the eighth inning but forced at second base. In the ninth the Sox had a fighting chance, because Dauss weakened for a moment.
Chick Shorten lined a single. Olaf Henriksen and Larry Gardner hit fly balls out to Ty Cobb before Duffy Lewis hit another single, sending Shorten to third. Hobby was passed to fill the bases. Tilly Walker came up and missed the first strike, and hit a foul fly into the
left field stands. Dauss threw the third one low and outside which Walker chased and missed to end the game. Vean Gregg pitched for the Sox and gave up three runs in the first two innings, but then settled down, allowing only two hits in the final six innings. Harry
Hooper and Jack Barry were out on the field before the game, working out. |
