A wild pitch gives the Red Sox a win
June 23, 1916 ...
A's pitcher Tom Sheehan won it for the Red Sox. His wild pitch
gave the Red Sox an undeserved victory. The score was 1 to 0 and the solitary Sox run was given to them in the seventh inning when Sheehan, who only allowed two hits, uncorked a
run-scoring bad pitch. The Sox hits were made in the first and
eight innings and did not even figure in the run.
The Athletics nicked Ernie Shore
for six hits and two passes, but a smart defense provided the
solution and none was turned into a run. The Red Sox run came when
Sheehan walked Dick Hoblitzell. Tilly Walker sacrificed him to
second, and Larry Gardner moved him to third on his ground out to Nap
Lajoie, setting up the game-winning wild pitch. Red Sox
pitchers have now pitched three consecutive shutouts and have allowed
just two runs in the last six games. |
