Ernie Shore hits and pitches the Sox to a win
August 21, 1916 ...
More than 9000 fans, including the Shriners and Knights of Columbus delegation were at Fenway Park to see the Red Sox beat the Indians 4 to 0. It was all Boston from start to finish, with Ernie Shore pitching airtight ball and the Red Sox playing great
defense.
The Indians sent their great young pitcher Guy Morton to the mound, but it was evident that he was in trouble very early. He worked as if he had not completely recovered from his recent illness, but he was game and went through.
Cleveland failed to score a run. Bill Wambsgnass, in the fifth inning, was the only player to reach second base. The Red Sox had men on base during seven of the eight innings, and reckless baserunning cost them two more runs.
Tris Speaker was given a loud ovation when he walked to the plate, and he responded with a hard liner to Harry Hooper. In the sixth he lined out to Dick Hoblitzell and for the second time in two days, failed to reach base. |
