SERIES CHAMPS
The Sox make it three
straight
over Cleveland
August 22, 1916 ...
The Cleveland Indians were defeated by the Red Sox by a score of 3 to 0 at Fenway Park. Their loss of five games on the road has all but shattered their dream of winning the pennant.
Carl Mays was on the mound for the Sox and pitched superbly until he gave up three base hits in the sixth inning. In the next inning he faltered but was saved by a timely doubleplay. The Indians were in a great position to score in the first inning with
the bases full, but the next man was forced at home and the final out came on a pop fly.
The Sox scored the run they needed to win in the bottom of the first inning. Harry Hooper doubled to right and Jack Barry was safe while trying sacrifice, when Sam Chapman dropped Jim Bagby's throw to first. Duffy Lewis then hit a ball back to Bagby,
who threw out Hooper at home. Dick Hoblitzell grounded to Chapman, but his throw home was late and Jack Barry made it 1 to 0. The Sox added two more runs in the seventh to make it 3 to 0. Tris Speaker got his only hit of the series for the Indians. |
