1916 BOSTON RED SOX |
BACK-TO-BACK WORLD
SERIES CHAMPS
Red Sox beat Connie Mack's men, 4-2
October 2, 1916 ...
The Red Sox and the Athletics went through the motions of playing a baseball game in one hour and nineteen minutes at Fenway Park, with the Red Sox winning 4 to 2. The Champions started their regular team and, with four hits, got away with an easy two
run lead. Ernie Shore worked the first five innings and held the A's hitless, but Sam Jones, while finished up, was nicked for four hits and two runs. All afternoon it was a case of the batters hitting the first pitch.
It was confirmed that the first two games of the World Series would be played at Braves Field, with a 1:30 start time. The players liked the idea, stating that the lighting was better. President Lannin left for New York for meetings with the
Brooklyn and Philadelphia National League clubs on the World Series agenda. Clerks at Fenway Park were busy working on ticket applications. On Thursday an exhibition game will take place in Worcester, between the Red Sox and Athletics, with proceeds going to John H. Gaffney,
an old National League umpire. |
