 1916 WORLD SERIES, GAME #1
The Red Sox come through after seeing the game slipping away

October 7, 1916 ... Nearly 40,000 fans saw the Red Sox beat the Brooklyn Robins 6 to 5 at Braves Field in the first game of the World Series.  The Sox outplayed Brooklyn throughout the game.  In the ninth inning however, the Sox almost let the game slip away.  Brooklyn rallied on a last ditch effort and the finish was a nail biter in every sense of the word.  With the bases full, and the tying run on third, Jake Daubert smashed a ground ball to the right of Everett Scott, who made a superb running pickup, and made a perfect throw to first to save the win.

The Red Sox clearly outplayed the Robins, especially up the middle where Scotty and Hal Janvrin were outstanding.  For Brooklyn Hi Myers robbed Harry Hooper of a home run in the second inning, with the bases loaded by grabbing his hard line drive in deep center field.  Harry Hooper, in turn, robbed Brooklyn by taking a low liner and throwing out Zack Wheat at the plate.

The day was perfect with a strong east wind.  Jack Coombs and Jack Barry were on the coaching lines for their teams.  Brooklyn was turned back in the first inning and to celebrate, the Royal Rooters broke out in a chorus of "Tessie".  The Red Sox scored the first run in the third inning.  Two men struck out and Dick Hoblitzell drove the ball through the wind in right for a triple, followed by Duffy Lewis hitting one to left for a double.  Lewis soon became too shy around second and was thrown out napping by Chief Meyers.

The Robins came alive in the fourth.  Casey Stengel opened with a single and romped home when Zack Wheat thumped one off the right field wall for a three bases.  George Cutshaw's low liner to right was grabbed on the run by Harry Hooper who pegged a perfect throw to nail Wheat at the plate.

HARRY HOOPER'S FIRST AT BAT

In the fifth Harry Hooper got lucky when Hi Myers lost his fly ball in the sun, letting Hooper make it to second base.  Hal Janvrin put him on third with a fine sacrifice and he scored on Tilly Walker's single to left.  In the seventh a strong rally by the Sox put them a strong lead, scoring four runs.  Janvrin started it off with a double down the left field line.  Ivy Olson then fumbled Tilly Walker's grounder and George Cutshaw fumbled Duffy Lewis' sacrifice bunt.  Larry Gardner hit one to Cutshaw who tried to get Walker at home but had no chance.  The Brooklyn infield looked scared at this point.

EVERETT SCOTT

In the ninth inning, the Sox were ahead 6 to 1 and it looked like an easy win.  As the crowd started to leave, Brooklyn got busy.  Jake Daubert worked a walk.  Casey Stengel hit a grounder to Hal Janvrin that Daubert timed so Janny lost view of the ball as he ran by, and the ball hit him on the arm.  Shore hit Cutshaw on the shirt with a pitch to load the bases.  Mike Mowrey's weak infield hit scored Daubert, leaving the bases still full.  Ivy Olson smaked one at Larry Gardner that he was only able to just knock down letting Stengel score.  The fourth run scored on Myer's single with the bases loaded.  Now with one run needed to tie it up Daubert came back up.  The crowd was still, and Carl Mays took the ball from Shore.  The count was two strikes and one ball.  Mays cut one of his underhanded shoots at Daubert, who smacked it by Larry Gardner, but not by Everett Scott, who took the ball running away and with one motion got Daubert at first by a hair.
