BACK-TO-BACK WORLD SERIES CHAMPS
 1916 WORLD SERIES, GAME #2
The Red Sox win a thriller in 14 innings

October 9, 1916 ... Two great teams were forced to travel through fourteen innings before the Red Sox prevailed on a base hit by pinch hitter Del Gainor, which scored pinch runner Mike McNally with the winning run, giving the victory to the Sox 2 to 1, and a 2-0 game lead in the World Series.

The Robins came back strong after their defeat when Hi Myers smashed the ball to the center field fence for a home run.  It would be the only run they would score in 14 innings.  Myers played a great game in center field saving the day for his team in the ninth inning, when it looked like it was all over.  Zack Wheat started by dropping Hal Janvrin's drive in left filed, allowing him to get on second base. Myers then made a great throw to the plate after taking a line drive from Dick Hoblitzell and throwing out the speedy Hal Janvrin at home to save the game.  In the third inning the Sox tied the game when Everett Scott hit a line drive to the right field wall good for three bases.  He would later score on a ground out to George Cutshaw at second base.

HI MYERS INSIDE-THE-PARK HOME RUN

The greatest play of the day happened in the 13th inning and saved the game for the Sox.  With a man on second base and two outs,  Sherry Smith sent a short fly out to left field and it looked like it would drop in.  But Duffy Lewis delighted the Braves Field crowd and dove after the ball and managed to hold on to it.  The work of the Boston infield was brilliant with Larry Gardner, Everett Scott and Janvrin killing off hits and saving Babe Ruth from a bad beating.  Sherry Smith clearly outpitched the Babe, although the Babe got stronger after the eighth inning.  Only two men saw first for the rest of the game for Brooklyn.  The Red Sox outplayed Brooklyn and but for the great pitching of Smith and the fielding of Myers, the Robins would have little to be proud of.
