“DIARY OF A WINNER”

DUTCH LEONARD

BACK-TO-BACK WORLD SERIES CHAMPS
 1916 WORLD SERIES, GAME #4
Larry Gardner's home run and
Dutch Leonard's pitching stops Brooklyn

October 11, 1916 ... The Red Sox were called upon to show their force with their bats today, and the second half of the game was a walkover for the Champions.  They unleashed a savage attack on Rube Marquard, who was set back in his hopes of tying up the series with a 6 to 2 thumping.  The Sox now just need one game to repeat as World Champions.

With Brooklyn leading 2 to 0 in the second inning, Larry Gardner strolled to the plate with Dick Hoblitzell and Duffy Lewis on base.  Marquard had the count three and two and unleashed a fast ball that took off on a line between right and center field.  Gardner ran all around the bases and touched home long before the ball reached the catcher.  That gave the Sox the lead and seemed to take the heart out of the Robins.  The Royal Rooter surrounding their brass band were the only ones cheering in an otherwise dead silent crowd.

That lead gave Dutch Leonard a boost after having given up two runs in the first inning.  Dutch settled down a became invincible.  Dutch worked his magic with curves and the Brooklyn men realized they had an uphill climb.  He took his time and the game slowed down with each inning that passed.

BILL CARRIGAN AT BAT
(CHIEF MEYERS CATCHING)

With the Red Sox holding a 4 to 2 lead in the fourth inning, George Cutshaw stirred the crowd with a slash down the right field line that Harry Hooper couldn't hold on to, slowing down as he approached the wall.  Mike Mowrey walked, but Ivy Olson and Hi Myers could only pop up Dutch's pitches.  Dutch then struck out pinch hitter, Jeff Pfeffer to end the threat.

That was it for Brooklyn.  The Sox scored two more runs and it was the end of the scoring.  As Brooklyn trotted out relief pitchers, Dutch grew stronger and was making jokes out of the Brooklyn batters.  Only one Robin batter reached base over the last four innings.  At the close of the game, the Royal Rooters and their band marched around the field, forcing President Lannin out of his box to join them.
