THE SOX LOSE 100 GAMES
...
Dick
Radatz wins the game himself in the 11th
June 5, 1965
... Dick Radatz finished off his sixth
consecutive game saved with an 11th inning homer which gave the Red
Sox a 5 to 3 win over the Kansas City Athletics. The win was his
fourth of the year.
He came into to pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning after a Sox
rally had tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the inning. He struck
out the side but gave up a base hit in the middle. Then in the 10th,
he struck out the side again and got two more strikeouts in the 11th
inning to finish off a great night for himself.
Radatz's homer came off Jesse Hickman who didn't realize that Radatz
had a .394 BA. He threw one pitch and Radatz sent the ball over the
left field fence some 400 feet. He the raised his two arms in his
winning gesture, but this time after he crossed the plate.
Earl Wilson started the night and the Sox gave him a 2-0 lead. They
scored once in the second inning on a double by Lee Thomas and a base
hit by Rico Petrocelli. In the fourth inning, a walk to Thomas, a
double by Gary Geiger and a base hit by Bob Tillman, accounted for
the second run.
Wilson breezed along for five innings, but in the sixth he walked the
leadoff batter, Wayne Causey, whop came home on a triple by Bert
Campaneris. Wilson the threw a pitch away and allowed Campy to score.
In the seventh, the A's went up 3-2 when Dick Green homered and Bob
Ryan doubled. That spelled the night for Wilson and Bob Duliba was
given the ball. Duliba held the A's in check before Radatz took over.
Lenny Green started the ninth inning rally for the Sox, that tied the
game. He hit a line drive that centerfielder Jim Landis made a great
diving attempt in trying to catch, but he had trapped the ball, so
Green ended up on second with a double. Then Dalton Jones brought him
in with a base hit, sending the game into overtime. |
