The
Sox sweep a doubleheader from Washington
June 27, 1965 ... The Red Sox completed a
doubleheader sweep of the Washington Senators on Bob Tillman's 11th
inning single with the bases loaded. Jim Lonborg pitched a
tremendous game to register a 4 to 1 victory in the opener. Reliever Bob Duliba
was was credited with his first Red Sox win in the 5 to 4 overtime victory.
Lenny Green save the game with a running, crashing catch in the top of the 11th
inning for the Red Sox.
Then in the bottom of the 11th the Sox began with a double bagger by Carl
Yastrzemski. Felix Mantlla was ordered walked and then Tony Conigliaro lay down
a sacrifice bunt. Lee Thomas was walked to fill the bases, bringing up Tillman.
He lined a 3-1 drive into right-center that scored Yaz with the winning run.
Ryan Duren was the pitcher for Washington and was his usual wild self. He ran up
a 3-0 count on Tillman, who was just trying to hit a sacrifice fly to bring in
the winning run.
The Red Sox had blown a 4 to 1 lead in the game and it looked as though the
game was gone in the 11th inning. With one out, Bob Chance banged out his fourth
hit of the day with two outs. Ken Hamlin single and Chance went to second base.
Don Blasingame walked to load the bases before Ed Brinkman hit a line drive out
toward centerfield. Lenny Green went back to the wall and reached as high as he
could to snare the ball, ending the threat.
Washington was the first to score in the second inning. The Red Sox came back
with three runs in their half of the inning. A walk to Conigliaro and singles by
Thomas and Tillman were good for a run. A pass to Rico Petrocelli and an Earl
Wilson single brought in two more. Lee Thomas followed with his 13th home run
into the Red Sox bullpen to give them a 4 to 1 lead in the third inning.
Washington picked up another run in the fifth and two more solo home runs
followed, to tie it 4 to 4, sending the game into extra innings.
Lonborg overcame a shaky first inning two more or less breeze into his fifth
win of his rookie season in the first game, 4 to 1. The lone Washington run was
unearned when Lee Thomas booted a ground ball. Ken McMullen followed with a base
hit. Lonborg got the next two batters but Jim King singled Blasingame home with
their only run.
The Sox tied up the game in the first inning. Lenny Green opened with a
single, but was forced at second by Dalton Jones. Yaz singled Jones to third and
a wild pitch brought him home to tie the game. Green stroked a double to lead
off the third and Yaz's single broke the 1-1 tie. Insurance runs were added in
the fourth and sixth innings. Lonborg walked with nobody out in the fourth and
raced over to third on Jones a single, later scoring on a wild pitch, making the
score 3 to 1. Tony C. walked in the eighth, advancing to third on Russ Nixon
single and scoring on Rico Petrocelli's sacrifice fly.
Yastrzemski hit .500 for the day, closing in on the American League batting
leader, Vic Davalillo. It was a big day for Lee Thomas who knocked out five
straight hits. |
