|
FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM June 2, 1912 ... The Naps jumped out to a 3-1 lead off Joe Wood and held on until the sixth inning. Six errors undid the Cleveland from that point on. Larry Gardner reached second on Neal Ball’s wild throw in sixth. Jake Stahl launched a triple to center and came home when Joe Birmingham dropped Heinie Wagner’s fly ball, to tie the score at 3 to 3. In the eighth Cleveland went back ahead. Ivy Olson singled and was forced at second by Joe Jackson. Jack Barry was hit by a pitch and Birmingham popped in a Texas Leaguer just behind short that scored the fleet footed Jackson. The Nats fans had visions of more runs, but it was getting dark and Peckinpaugh drove the ball right at Gardner who caught the ball and doubled up Birmingham at second. The lead lasted just a half inning for in the ninth, Ball again made a wild throw on Harry Hooper's grounder allowing him to get to second base. Lefty George booted Steve Yerkes’ sacrifice bunt putting two men on base. Speaker forced Yerkes as Hooper scored the tying run. The Nats failed to do anything in the ninth and the game went into extra innings. In the tenth Les Nunamaker singled and Wood reached on a ball that rolled through Peckinpaugh’s legs. Hooper singled and went to second on Birmingham’s wild throw, allowing Nunamaker to score what would be the winning run. In Cleveland's half of the inning Olson flied out to Hooper and Jackson flew out to Lewis, then Yerkes took an easy ground ball off the bat of Lajoie and the Red Sox found themselves very fortunate to be come from behind winners. Jake Stahl made his first appearance in a month and got a pair of hits. |
