“DIARY OF A WINNER”

TED EASTERLY

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
The Naps defeat the Red Sox one run at a time

June 3, 1912 ... The Cleveland Naps fought uphill and overtook the Red Sox 4 to 3. The Speed Boys got off to a flying start but were stopped short.

They got to Fred Blanding in the first inning. Tris Speaker’s double, a wild throw and four hits, netted the Sox three runs.

Cleveland got one run back in the bottom of the first when Graney was passed by Buck O'Brien and Ivy Olson singled. Olson and Graney worked a double steal as the third strike floated over the plate to Joe Jackson. Graney scored a minute later on a ground ball out to Heinie Wagner.

In the Red Sox second inning Roger Peckinpaugh made a great stop off the bat of Bill Carrigan. Blanding passed O'Brien and Hooper singled. It was then that he was taken out of the game in favor of Jim Baskette. Baskette erased Yerkes and Speaker grounded out to Ball. From that point on the Red Sox could do nothing at the plate as Baskette bore down when he was in trouble.

In the bottom of the second Cleveland added another run as to make it 3 to 2, as Ted Easterly smashed a home run over the high right field wall, his second of the season. The only other players to hit a ball over the wall are Joe Jackson, Sam Crawford and Buddy Ryan.

In the third inning Jackson tripled on a ball that Duffy Lewis lost in the sun, but he was wasted at third-base was nobody could knock him in. Baskette and O'Brien continued to get each other's team out until the seventh inning when Cleveland tied up the score.

Peckinpaugh led off with a single and stole second. Ball got to first, being hit by a pitch and then the Naps use their head. With Baskette at the plate and not much of a hitter, Peck and Ball worked a double steal. Just as Carrigan threw the ball down to Yerkes, Ball stopped and let Yerkes come after him with the ball. As he chased him down, Peckinpaugh broke for the plate. Yerkes spun around and made a late throw to Carrigan, letting the runner score the tying run, and Ball went safely to third.

In the bottom of the eighth, Olson was grazed on the right-hand by an O'Brien pitch and went to first. Jackson lifted a fly out to Duffy Lewis and Olson went to second on Lewis' high throw that got past Heinie Wagner at short. Then Birmingham struck out. O'Brien decided to pass Easterly intentionally to set up the force, but Ted had other ideas and stuck his bat out across the plate, knocking a single into left field and scoring the winning run.
