“DIARY OF A WINNER”

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM June 21, 1912 ... The Sox made it three straight in New York, by taking the final game of the series with the Highlanders, by a score of 11 to 3. It was an easy game for the Speed Boys, who used their bats effectively on Jack Quinn. Duffy Lewis led the charge with a single and a triple, and then banged the ball on a line, to the centerfield bleachers for a home run. Joe Wood had an easy time against New York's batters. He had a great fastball and a very effective changeup that kept them off balance throughout the game. The Red Sox jumped out in front in the second inning, scoring five runs on a pass, two misplays, and hits by Larry Gardner, Hick Cady and Steve Yerkes. After that, the Highlanders just went through the motions, while the Red Sox played a superb fielding game, in spite of three errors, two by Jake Stahl on dropped throws. He also tried to steal second twice and was successful only once. Stahl is feeling the pressure of managing and playing, but is fighting hard to keep his boys moving in the right direction. Hal Chase was back in the New York lineup, but even as great a player as he is, could not make New York look like a worthy opponent. It was his seventh straight win from the Highlanders. In the second inning, Duffy Lewis was passed to start off. Gardner singled and Stahl tried to sacrifice him to second but popped up to Chase. Wagner reached on Bill Stumpf's fumble and Cady singled. Olaf Henriksen reached first on Roy Hartzell's ground ball error and Yerkes doubled. That netted the Red Sox five runs, and they added another one in the third on Lewis' home run to centerfield, that made the score 6 to 0. New York came back with one run in their half of the sixth inning, only to see the Red Sox add three more in their top of the seventh. Henriksen opened with a single and Yerkes grounded out to first. Tris Speaker came up and singled in Henriksen, and scored himself on a triple by Lewis. Duffy scored on Stahl's hit, making the score 9 to 1. Two more runs were added in the eighth-inning on a triple by Cady, a line drive single by Henriksen and another single by Yerkes. New York scored two runs in the eighth and ninth-inning but it was far from enough, and the game ended with the Red Sox winning 11 to 3. Buck O'Brien has been suffering from a bad cold and Larry Gardner is hurting with a stiff neck. Tris Speaker has been playing with a broken finger on his right hand, but it doesn't seem to bother him. Tomorrow night, Charley Hall, Joe Wood, Buck O'Brien, Hugh Bedient, Harry Hooper, Heinie Wagner, Bill Carrigan and Ray Collins will leave here for Washington, while the other members of the team, go to Baltimore to play an exhibition game with Jack Dunn's Orioles team. |
