“DIARY OF A WINNER”

HILLTOP PARK

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
The Red Sox make if five
in a row against New York

June 22, 1912 ... Without exerting themselves to any great extent, the Red Sox today gave it to the New York Highlanders two times at the Hilltop Park. The pennant leaders grabbed the opening game by eleven runs and took the nightcap by seven runs. Thus, they made a clean sweep of the series here in New York.

The first game was an easy victory for the Speed Boys. George McConnell was on the mound for the Highlanders and was totally ineffective all the time. The Sox got to him for a triple, four doubles and five singles, in the five innings plus that he pitched. And the one of the Red Sox hits was wasted. McConnell was succeeded by Tommy Thompson, a recruit from the University of Georgia. He was soft for two innings, after which the Sox must have gotten tired of running the bases, because they scored no more.

Jack Warhop pitched the second game and his wildness made it possible for the Sox to win with ease. In this game the Highlanders tied the score on the Sox for the first time during the entire series. That was in the first inning, when the Red Sox had scored one run and the Highlanders tied it up in their half. In the fifth inning, New York actually grabbed a 3 to 2 lead, but that lasted only for a moment as the Sox scored three runs in their next time at bat and waltzed their way to an easy game. Ray Collins was on the mound and buckled down when base hits would have meant runs.

The bombardment by the Red Sox bats in the previous games was resumed in the second inning of game one. Duffy Lewis hit a high bounder that tipped off the fingers of Jack Martin and was good for two bases. On Larry Gardner's clean drive to center, Lewis made it to third and Larry took second on the throw. Manager Jake Stahl, with a single to center, scored both Lewis and Gardner, then stole second and made it to third when Hick Cady grounded out. He then scored on Charlie Hall's clean base hit.

After the Highlanders scored a run, the Red Sox attack continued as they scored four more runs in the third inning. After Lewis had flied out to Pat Maloney, Gardner slammed the ball to center and it rolled to the fence allowing him to pull up at third standing up. He then scored on Stahl's sacrifice fly. Martin made an error that allowed Heinie Wagner to reach base, but Heinie found himself out trying to steal.

The slaughter went on in the sixth and seventh innings for five additional runs. In the seventh inning Gardner walked and Wagner singled, then Stahl came through with a two bagger that scored both the runners. Thompson tightened up in the last two innings and the Sox got only one hit, an infield scratch by Tris Speaker, but still they won the game by a score of 13 to 2.

The Red Sox had a great chance to take a big lead at the start of game number two, but failed. Jack Warhop passed Olaf Henriksen and then Steve Yerkes. Speaker hit one to center, good for two bases and scored Henriksen. Lewis hit one to Roy Hartzell and was run down, with Warhop getting the put out. Stahl worked the pitcher for a pass, but then Wagner tried to bunt and struck out instead. That put one run on the board which New York took back in their half of the inning.

The Sox went ahead again in the third inning. After Speaker had driven Guy Zinn to the fence with his drive, Lewis shot the ball by Zinn and made the circuit before it was thrown back. With the score 2 to 1 against them, New York made a bold attempt to get something going in the third inning, but failed. Martin was passed and stole second base. Hal Chase flied out to Hendrickson and Birdie Cree walked. The two New York runners pulled off a double steal aided by a wild pitch, but then Gardner and Stahl took care of Zinn to end the threat.

In the fifth inning the Highlanders took the lead for the first time since the Sox came to town, but the Red Sox went right back and scored three runs in the sixth inning. In the seventh inning Speaker took Warhop's ninth walk of the game and then Warhop passed the first man he faced in the eighth, Bill Carrigan. Carrigan advanced on Ray Collins' sacrifice and Henriksen singled to center, with Maloney letting the ball get away from him. Henriksen circled the bases behind Carrigan to make the score 8 to 3.

Hippo Vaughn came in for the ninth-inning to finish the game and began where Warhop left off by passing Gardner. Stahl singled, putting Gardner on third, and then should've been an easy out at second but Earle Gardner dropped Hartzell's throw and Gardner scored on Wagner's out. Stahl made it to third and then scored himself on a passed ball. Henriksen next got his fourth base on balls of the game and then Martin fumbled Yerkes grounder to fill the bases. Speaker hit one to Martin who forced Yerkes at second to end the Red Sox scoring. New York went in order, in their last chance at bat and the Red Sox walked away 10 to 3 winners.
