“DIARY OF A WINNER”

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM

June 23, 1912
... No game scheduled ... When the Boston Red Sox left the New York after the game last Saturday, they had the satisfaction of realizing that they had put in the most successful week of the season from about every point of view.  Nine batters batted the ball from .294 to .533.

The Red Sox scored 64 runs to their opponents 23.  Duffy Lewis came to life, getting 16 hits, three for home runs, three triples and two doubles. Hick Cady had seven hits batting .467

Today, Jack Dunn's Baltimore Orioles took a victory from the Red Sox in an exhibition game at Back River Grounds in Baltimore. Jimmy Dygert was assigned to hurl for the Birds and for seven innings he got along pretty well, in spite of being touched up for 12 hits, which he kept scattered however.

The Red Sox put over three runners in the first inning and another score was chalked up in the second. They were then shutout until the seventh when three more runs were pushed across the plate. In the eighth-inning Doc Martin pitched and a runner was sent over on two sharp doubles.

The Orioles got busy in the second and third innings getting two runs. They jumped on Jack Bushelman for five hits and a base on balls, when six runs scored. Eddie Cicotte replace Bushelman and Baltimore soon got to him also in the sixth inning, rolling up five runs. Another score was made by Baltimore when George Maisel's hit went for three bases in the eighth. Fred Payne's drive sent the little shortstop over the plate.

Mickey Corcoran and big Jake Gettman led the Orioles in batting, with each man getting three singles, all of which came with men on base. Butch Schmidt was their chief scorer, coming across the plate three times. Hugh Bradley got three hits for the Sox while Tris Speaker and Olaf Henriksen both made great catches in the outfield.
