“DIARY OF A WINNER”

TY COBB

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
The Tigers pile up five early runs
and the Red Sox can't catch up

July 15, 1912 ... Led by Ty Cobb (3 for 4), the Detroit Tigers knocked around Charley Hall and beat the Sox 6-4.  The Speed Boys getting off to a poor start, but giving their fine crowd of fans a delightfully entertaining game, getting after the Tigers in the final innings. Hall was hit hard and freely for the first three innings and retired in favor of Hugh Bedient, who held the visitors to one run in the next five innings, but the lead they gained was too big to overcome, especially since the home team did not have a good game at the plate.

The fielding of the home team was his clever his usual, although the playing of the visitors was perfect also. However, a failure of Hall to cover first base on a ball hit to Jake Stahl, got the Red Sox in the trouble that they were not able to get out of.

Ty Cobb gave a sensational exhibition with the bat, making a single and two triples, however he was caught at the plate in trying to stretch a hit, and was nailed again when trying to steal home in the seventh inning. Ty however, scored one run with his speed, quick thinking, and Steve Yerkes' failure to keep his eye on him, when he scored from second on a grounder to second, that he played to first.

The Tigers were forced to change pitchers in the middle of the eighth-inning, when the Red Sox had men at second and third and only two runs were needed to tie the score. Then Jean Dubuc came in and disposed of Hick Cady on strikes and retired Clyde Engel at first. Again, in the ninth-inning, with Hooper at second, Yerkes, Speaker and Lewis were easy outs.

Ty Cobb, with two men out in the first inning, drove one to right for three bases but was nipped at the plate trying for home by Harry Hooper. The Tigers scored their first run in the second inning. With a man on base, Baldy Louden hit the ball to the bleachers in center and then the Tigers were off. In the next inning, three more runs came across the plate on Ralph Works' double and singles by Ossie Vitt, Donie Bush, and Jim Delehanty, making it 5 to 0.

The Red Sox had their backs to the wall but scored their first run in the fourth inning on Speaker's single and a single by Larry Gardner that got away from Cobb on a bad bounce. The Tigers got that run back in the fifth on Yerkes' failure to get Cobb at the plate.

Speaker scored Boston's second run in the sixth on a single, a stolen base, a muffed fly ball by Bush and a sacrifice fly, making the score 6 to 2. The Red Sox rallied in the eighth-inning when Speaker drove went to the fence in center field for a home run. Duffy Lewis went out but then Larry Gardner singled, and Olaf Henriksen batted for Hugh Bradley. He made it to first on a wild throw by the pitcher, Wagner walked and the bases were filled.

At that point Hugh Jennings brought out Dubuc, who after a wild pitch, allowed Gardner to score the Sox fourth run. Then he got five of the next six men he faced and walked away a 6 to 4 winner.
