“DIARY OF A WINNER”

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM July 22, 1912 ... The hard playing Boston Red Sox kept up their pace at Fenway Park, getting a victory over Cleveland by a score of 8 to 3. The Sox jumped off into a good lead in the first inning, and while threatened with a tie in the fourth, when the Naps bunched their hits, the Sox got underway once again in the same inning. They were running on a smooth keel with the pitching of Buck O'Brien. He pitched effectively until they were never in danger after the fourth inning. Harry Krause, the Athletics old left-hander, who has bothered the Red Sox for two seasons, was released a few weeks ago to Toledo where he did some fine work. He joined the Cleveland team here and was sent to the mound to beat the Sox, who drove the left-hander to the dugout in the fourth inning. Jim Baskette who finished the game pitched very well. For Cleveland, it was Terry Turner who put up a great game in the field and he turned in two singles and a double in four times at bat. Steve Yerkes was the only Sox player to go without a hit. He hit the ball hard and often enough, only to find a Cleveland player standing in front of everything he hit. Bill Carrigan came across with two timely hits as the home team bunched hits in the first and fourth innings, and helped out by a pass, they scored six runs. There were eight hits made by the visitors and they were scattered through six innings, as O'Brien refused to give any free passes, so the runs did not come easily for Cleveland. The Boston outfield covered an immense amount of ground, and Larry Gardner was strong at third, with one stop of a hard drive that he cleverly blocked and played over the first beautifully. The Naps got one stolen base chargeable to Bill Carrigan, as Stahl was playing back in the ninth-inning allowing the runner to get a good lead. After disposing of the Naps in the first inning, the Speed Boys got busy in their half and scored three runs. Harry Hooper hit one to centerfield for a triple and Tris Speaker walked and stole second. Duffy Lewis singled and Gardner cleaned up with a fine triple to dead center. Cleveland got men to first in the third and fourth innings on a single by Turner and Heinie Wagner's fumble, but no damage was done. They finally put up two runs in the fourth on Jackson's single, who scored on a triple by Art Griggs. Turner singled in Griggs to make the score 3 to 2. Jake Stahl opened up the Red Sox fourth inning with a double to the bank in left field and Heinie Wagner sacrificed him to third. Carrigan brought him in with a single to left and went to second himself when Buddy Ryan threw the ball to the plate. O'Brien singled to score Carrigan and he went to second when the ball broke by Joe Birmingham. Then Hooper singled to score O'Brien and went to third when Birmingham threw wildly to first. Steve Yerkes hit one to Turner who nailed Hooper at the plate and Speaker finished the inning by grounding out to Ryan. The Sox added another run in the fifth when Duffy Lewis walked and Larry Gardner hit into a force out. Jake Stahl fouled a pop out to Steve O'Neill, and with two down Speaker doubled and scored on Duffy Lewis' single to center. Then in the sixth inning the Red Sox scored another one only to have Cleveland score one more in the eighth. That made the final score 8 to 3 or another Red Sox win at Fenway. |
