“DIARY OF A WINNER”

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM July 28, 1912 ... The Red Sox won the second game of the series here in Chicago today by a score 5 to 4, before a large crowd of enthusiastic fans. Joe Wood had his game going with a score of 5 to 0 up until the fifth inning, when with one out, he hit a man, later passed another and was found for four smashing hits, that was good for four runs. Hugh Bedient came in after that and pitched the next four innings, with Chicago only being able to get to him for two singles. Eddie Cicotte was on the mound for Chicago and hit hard by the Red Sox, with Jake Stahl banging one into the screen in left field and later putting the ball over the fence into the crowd, for a nice home run that turned out to be the winning score. The White Sox were anxious to put a crimp in the Boston lead, but with the scoreboard showing Washington taking two in Cleveland, the Sox players were in no humor and played their hearts out. The blowup of Joe Wood was quite the surprise, for he had everything going, including his great speed. It was a clear case of failing to find the weakness of the batters in one inning. The Boston team never broke ground during Wood's bad inning and held the lead by their clever hitting. The game started out however with Harry Hooper drawing a pass and Steve Yerkes knocking out a hit to center. Tris Speaker came up and got a lucky infield single and the bases were loaded for Duffy Lewis who hit into a doubleplay, but allowed Hooper to score. Larry Gardner came up and singled and that scored Steve Yerkes. Jake Stahl ended the inning by flying out to centerfield.
Speaker opened the third inning with a double and went to third when Lewis sacrificed himself. He scored when Stahl hit the ball against the left-field fence to make it 3 to 0. Then in the fifth inning Speaker got two bases on an error by Billy Sullivan. Lewis again sacrificed and Speaker scored on Larry Gardner's out at first. Stahl strolled to the plate again and then smashed the ball into left-field bleachers for a home run to give the Red Sox their fifth run. Then came the bottom half of the inning and Wood started by hitting Sullivan with a pitched ball. Cicotte reached on a base hit and Morrie Rath intended to sacrifice him but was safe on Woods wide throw first, that allowed Sullivan to score and put men at second and third. After Rollie Zieder flied out to Hooper, Cicotte tagged up and scored the second Chicago run. Wood then walked Eddie Collins and Harry Lord hit the first ball pitched to him for a single that scored Rath. Matty McIntyre banged the ball safely to right to score Collins and that was enough for manager Stahl. He came out and pulled Wood and brought in Bedient. Ping Bodie hit one back to the pitcher and the threat ended with the Red Sox still maintaining a one run lead, 5 to 4. Stahl open the eighth-inning with his third hit of the game and Heinie Wagner sacrificed him to second. He was stranded there when both Bill Carrigan and Bedient popped out. It was now up to the White Sox in the ninth-inning, down one run. After Rollie Zieder led off with a long fly to right, Eddie Collins singled to left. Collins started with the pitch from first base as Lord flew one out to Hooper in right, who turned as if the sun was bothering him and misled Collins, who kept on running. Hooper then brought the ball in and threw to first, doubling up Collins for a doubleplay to end the game. |
