Red Sox win again for three straight
July 29, 1912
...
The Boston Red Sox made it three straight in Chicago winning this one by
score of 7 to 5. White Sox used three pitchers with Doc White coming in
from last four innings and showing his old time form, holding down the Red
Sox. But the Sox touched Joe Benz and Rube Peters easily in the first five
innings. Ray Collins looked like he was going to be perfect for three
innings, but the White Sox got to him in the fourth with three safe hits in
succession and scored two runs. Boston scored four runs in the third. Bill
Carrigan was safe on Harry Lord's high throw to first and then Ray Collins drew
a pass. Harry Hooper intended to sacrifice them along, but Benz threw wild to
third looking for the force out. That allowed Carrigan to score the first Boston
run. Steve Yerkes came up and sacrificed and Benz passed Tris Speaker
intentionally. Duffy Lewis flew out to left to score Collins from third and
Larry Gardner singled to score two more runners, but he was thrown out trying
for second. This gave the Red Sox a 4 to 0 lead that looked good for a while.
The Sox added three more runs in the fifth inning against Peters, on hits
being made by Steve Yerkes, Speaker, Lewis and Gardner in a row, giving them a 7
to 2 lead. That looked like a good enough margin in any game, but the White Sox
got to Collins in the same inning. The first three men up singled producing two
runs, and then Buck O'Brien was brought in to cut off the rally. The only run
scored off Buck came with two down, when Yerkes was slow in covering second for
the third out, bringing the score up to 7 to 5. With three innings to go O'Brien
was never in trouble, while White was pitching equally good ball for the White
Sox.
The Red Sox hit the ball very hard for the first five innings and were very
lucky with the three Texas Leaguers. It was a six straight defeat for the White
Sox by the Speed Boys at their home park and it was not taken well by the fans.
The Red Sox are out to clinch it all and took no chances, always having a
pitcher ready in the bullpen warming up. Although O'Brien pitched a difficult
game against Ed Walsh on Saturday, he was in fine form today for the last five
innings, showing the great strength of the Boston pitching staff. The Red Sox
have beat Chicago in 10 of their last 11 games, showing their superiority in
every department. |
