“DIARY OF A WINNER”

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
The Fighting Tigers struggle in vain
as the Sox play brilliant ball

August 8, 1912 ... In a remarkably brilliant all around fielding game, in which both teams hit the ball hard, as the Red Sox beat the Tigers at Navin Field in Detroit, by a score of 5 to 0. Great play by Tris Speaker and Duffy Lewis on harsh drives by Sam Crawford and Ty Cobb practically saved the game for Boston.

With one on and two down and the Red Sox two runs up, in the third inning, Crawford smashed a line drive to the corner of centerfield. Speaker turned and cut down the field and timing the ball perfectly, jumped up with his gloved hand and hooked in the ball. The catch saved two runs and the Red Sox maintained their lead. With two outs in the fourth inning and the bases full, Red McDermott got one and hit a fierce drive out to Duffy Lewis who had to run close to the foul line and made a catch close to the ground going at full speed, that saved two runs.

The Red Sox scored three runs in the fifth inning on a miscue at second on Heinie Wagner's ground ball, Bill Carrigan single and a home run by Harry Hooper. Ty Cobb made a hard try for Hooper's ball, but failed to reach it and Hooper crossed the plate before the ball could be returned to the infield. In that same inning Speaker rang out a base hit and then stole second. Lewis smashed the ball to left and Speaker was thrown out at the plate on the relay, McDermott to Ossie Bush to Oscar Stanage. It was a great play and good work for Detroit.

In the same inning Lewis robbed Cobb from a triple by making a circus catch and taking the ball as he jumped high in the air close to the scoreboard. In the seventh with one on, Cobb again smashed one that Steve Yerkes made a great catch on and doubled up Donie Bush at first.

Ray Collins grew more effective as the game went on, striking out three of the last six men who faced him. The Tigers had men on base in eight of the nine innings and seven of them were left there in the first four innings.

The Red Sox first two runs were made in the opening inning, with one down, on singles by Yerkes and Speaker. Lewis walked to load the bases and Larry Gardner hit one to Baldy Louden, who played the ball to Donie Bush at second and tripped over the bag, allowing Yerkes to score and Speaker, seeing what happened, took a chance and beat the ball to the plate.

Heinie Wagner made the only miscue for the Sox in the fourth inning and this filled the bases with two outs. Lewis then proceeded to make his great catch near the foul line to end the threat.

It was a big crowd in Detroit to watch the game and they rooted hard for the Tigers, but the fans were fair and gave great applause for the work done by the Red Sox. Tigers' pitcher Joe Lake was hit hard as the Red Sox reached first in seven of the nine innings.

Ty Cobb failed to hit safely in four times at bat, although he hit the ball hard two times. Ty also made a great catch off Larry Gardner.

The game was played without any arguing and the Red Sox looked like a real championship team, so much so, that the crowd left the field feeling that Boston had gained the top of the standings through good ball playing and staying power. The victory gave the Red Sox their eighth in the twelve games played on the trip, and gave them the assurance that they will return home with a good margin over the clubs behind them. When the teams arrived in the morning, it was raining, but the weather cleared off about noon time and was about the warmest day that has been experienced on the trip.

The Detroit fans were very much pleased to learn that manager Hughie Jennings will continue in his position for the next season. Jennings feels confident that he will have his team in the running again next year.
