“DIARY OF A WINNER”

HUGH BEDIENT

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
Bedient ties another knot in the Tigers' tail

August 9, 1912 ... Hugh Bedient proved himself a smart asset to the Red Sox by holding down the hard-hitting local nine to just one run, on five scattered hits, through four innings. The youngster started off a little shaky, but settled down after the third inning, getting in his effective crossfire and change of pace. The Tigers were only able to get to him for one hit after that.

So sure was manager Jake Stahl that the youngster would come through, that the other Boston pitchers were not asked to warm up, although Buck O'Brien and Hick Cady were reviewing the progress of the game from their corner of the field and were ready to limber up if needed.

This is the fifth time on the trip that a Boston pitcher as gone through the full nine innings. Bedient is the only pitcher to enjoy the distinction of the two complete games. Bill Carrigan coached his pitcher and it is he who belongs to much of Bedient's success. This was especially noticeable with Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford at bat. In eight times up for the pair of sluggers, Crawford went hitless and Cobb could only get one. That hit sent the Tigers only run in with his double in the first inning. Cobb was then nipped at the plate while trying to steal home. Bedient struck him out in his last at bat of the day.

The Red Sox defensively were nearly perfect, except for a muffed by Stahl in the ninth inning, while errors were made by Cobb and Donie Bush for Detroit. Bush allowed Carrigan's ground ball to get by him, while the misplay by Cobb appeared to cost two runs. But Tris Speaker, the next man up, hit a double and even if Cobb had made a perfect play, Boston would have scored the same number of runs.

The Red Sox had scored one run in the first inning on a pass to Harry Hooper, a steal of second and outs by Yerkes and Speaker. Their second run was scored in the fourth inning on a double by Lewis and a single by Larry Gardner to give them a 2 to 1 lead.

After Harry Hooper had gotten a base hit to score Jake Stahl in the fourth inning, up came Steve Yerkes. Heinie Wagner was at third and Hooper at first, when Yerkes smashed a single to center. Cobb came in for the ball only to see it hit something and shoot by him, rolling all the way to the flagpole, as Yerkes succeeded in rounding all the bases. That made the score 6 to 1.

The veteran pitcher George Mullin got off to a start without allowing a hit for three innings, but in the next two innings the Sox took measure of him for seven safe drives, including doubles by Lewis and Speaker. He retired to the dugout after the fifth inning and Ralph Works put in a much better performance on the mound, holding the Sox to two singles by Lewis and Hooper, as well as a double by Stahl.

In rained quite hard during the morning and the playing field was slippery. A light shower popped up during the sixth inning and drove the spectators to cover, but the game was played out with a mist falling and the day rather too dark for sharp fielding. It then rained very hard after the game and the boys are apprehensive about the possibility of a rain out tomorrow and a doubleheader for Sunday.
