“DIARY OF A WINNER”
|
FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM August 11, 1912 ... It was the Tigers all the way in Detroit, and Jean Dubuc pitched a masterful game for them, while Ray Collins was wild and ineffective, and Charley Hall, who took his place for the last five innings, was hit hard. The score the game was 4 to 2, giving the Tigers their only win of the series. The first run of the game came on a pass to Steve Yerkes who went to second on Tris Speaker's out at first, and a timely single by Duffy Lewis to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. For the Tigers, their first two runs developed on passes handed out by Collins, the third on Sam Crawford's home run into the right-field bleachers in the sixth inning, and the fourth on Eddie Onslow's double and a single by Oscar Stanage in the seventh inning. The Sox last run in the ninth-inning was on Speaker's triple and a groundout. Bill Carrigan had a good chance for glory in the last inning, when with two runs needed to tie and men on second and third he hit a fast ground ball that was block at third by Charlie Deal, who recovered the ball after a run across the field and shot it in front of Carrigan to nip him at first. The Speed Boys put up a brilliant fielding game, especially by Speaker and Larry Gardner. Deal, at third for the Tigers, was their start defensively. The fielding of Dubuc was no less clever that his pitching. He got Olaf Henriksen for a strike out with two men on base and no outs. It was the 11th straight victory for Dubuc. Heavy rains put the grounds in poor condition, but both teams were anxious to get the game out of the way. Immediately after the game the Boston team went to the depot and took the train for home, well satisfied with their trip. They won 10 out of the 15 games played out West. Larry Pape went to his home in Cincinnati this evening, but will report to Boston next Wednesday to give the boys some good batting practice before the doubleheader with St. Louis in the home opener. |
