“DIARY OF A WINNER”

NEAL BALL

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
Boston gets just enough runs
to beat Detroit, 4-3

August 19, 1912 ... The Red Sox were under a full head of steam at Fenway Park and gave Boston a 4 to 3 victory over Hughie Jennings and the Detroit Tigers. There was a fine crowd out to see the fun, for it is always a good time when Jennings and his team come to town and today was no exception. Nothing but remarkable fielding saved a loss the Sox.

The Tigers found little trouble in connecting with the pitches thrown up by Hugh Bedient. He refused to hand out free passes, preferring the Tigers to hit the ball or go back to the dugout. Detroit scored their three runs in the third inning on three hits. There were two down, with men at first and third, when Ty Cobb stung one for a single. Then Sam Crawford found one to his liking and smashed it toward the centerfield bleachers for three bases and three runs were over the plate. That made the score 3 to 1, as the Red Sox had scored one in the second inning on a double by Larry Gardner and a base hit by bill Carrigan.

Ed Willett was pitching well with good control and good speed, and it was up to the Red Sox to hold the Tigers in the clinch and work out a few runs when they had the opportunity. They did it one at a time in the second, in the fourth, in the fifth and in the seventh inning to gain the victory. Bedient worked as crossfire, but was short of his usual speed. His support in the field however is what pulled him through.

The Red Sox scored their second run on the fourth inning through some fine baserunning by Clyde Engle, who found his way home on Carrigan's out at first. Oscar Stanage had fielded the ball and left home plate uncovered. The score was tied in the fifth inning when with the bases full, Heinie Wagner worked a pass, forcing Duffy Lewis home making the game 3 to 3. The Sox got three hits in this inning but Speaker was nipped at the plate on a great throw by Eddie Onslow.

With the game tied up it was up to somebody to get a run. The Tigers had several opportunities but great fielding by Larry Gardner blocked their way. Gardner put up a wonderful fielding game, making no fewer than three great left-handed stops while down the line. Nothing finer has been seen by a Red Sox infielder the season. Neil Ball also showed great form at second, covering ground like a Greyhound and making perfect throws while out of position. Gardner and Ball combined got no fewer than 13 assists while Clyde Engle played his steady game at first base.

The Red Sox finally pushed the winning run across in the seventh inning. Speaker got three bases on the slow grounder, which Oscar Stanage threw past first. The Lewis flied one out to Sam Crawford and Speaker beat his throw to the plate.

Speaker cracked out three safe hits and Crawford had three hits including two singles and a triple. The Tigers had men on base in seven of the nine innings, but only five of them reached third base. Boston had men on in six of the eight innings and six reach third base.

Hughie Jennings would really the life of the game with his lively coaching. His antics were always enjoyable early as never offensive and allows the umpires to go unmolested.
