1912
WORLD SERIES, GAME #6
Desperate Giants beat Buck O'Brien
and the Red Sox
October 14, 1912
...
The
New York Giants came back strong this afternoon, beating the Red Sox 5-2.
The Giants scored their five runs in the first inning as the results of
securing two infield singles on slow rollers in the wet grass to Steve
Yerkes and Heinie Wagner, as well as Buck O’Brien’s complete collapse.
With
two down and men on first and third, O’Brien turned to throw to first,
then held the ball. The umpire called him for a balk., forcing the
first run over the plate and taking all the sand out of him. Larry
Doyle wandered 10 feet of first without notice and stole second off
O’Brien easily. That it was not O’Brien’s day became very evident as
the next for men hit for two doubles and a single, bringing in four runs.
Although they hit Rube Marquard hard, the Red Sox found themselves in a
hole they couldn’t dig themselves out of. Ray Collins replaced
O’Brien and pitched a masterful game with only one Giant baserunner
reaching third after the first inning. Rube Marquard was steady,
passing only one man and holding the Sox to only one hit. He had
good speed and with a five run lead, pitched comfortably for the rest of
the game.

THE POLO GROUNDS |
The
game was simply over after the fourth inning. Up to that time Boston
was in the fight. Clyde Engel doubled in the second inning, driving
in two runs.
In the
third Larry Gardner hit one close to the right field fence that Red Murray
hauled in after a long run, killing off a potential three base hit.
In the fourth, Heinie Wagner drove one deep to center that Fred Snodgrass
saved with a remarkable leaping catch.
The
great fielding gave Marquard a lot more encouragement and confidence in
his task. No fewer than 15 of the Sox batters went out on fly balls
to the outfield showing that the Sox batters were getting good wood on the
balls they hit. The Red Sox big failing thus far in the Series has
been their ability to slug the ball. Sox superstar, Tris Speaker has
not smashed the cover off the ball yet. Even with the loss, the Red
Sox still have to win one game back in Boston with Joe Wood on the mound. |
