HERB PENNOCK |
WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Athletics attack Dutch Leonard
April 24, 1915
...
The Philadelphia
Athletics outplayed the Red Sox and won 6-3. Nearly all the fans
wore heavy overcoats to battle the strong east wind blowing across the
field. The weather was not ideal for baseball and nor were the Red
Sox.
The visitors went
after Dutch Leonard with a vengeance in the first inning, scoring two runs
on a pass and savage drives by Otis Strunk and Nap Lajoie. It was
obvious that Leonard did not have his good stuff and he lasted until
another savage onslaught in the fourth inning. Babe Ruth took his
place and allowed the runner left to him on second base, to score on two
wild pitches. Then he settled down and sent the A's back to their
dugout in order, for the next three innings. Rube Foster replaced
Ruth in the eight and ninth and also worked perfectly.
Herb Pennock
pitched for Philadelphia, and although rather wild at times, was
personally responsible for for this win. He could take credit for
the scoring of three runs, with a single and then ripping a double.
On the mound, he did not allow the Red Sox a hit after the second inning.
Three of the Red Sox hits came in the first inning and were good for one run.
Heinie Wagner and Tris Speaker both singled and Duffy Lewis and Wagner home with
the first run.
Philly scored a run in the second inning and picked up three in the fourth
inning, giving them a 5 to 1 lead. In the eighth-inning, Tris speaker, Duffy
Lewis and Del gainer all passed in succession. Everett Scott, with the bases
loaded waited Pennock out and received the fourth three pass to score speaker.
In the ninth-inning, Ray Haley and Duffy Lewis were walked. Speaker slammed a
liner to center that was dropped by Otis Strunk after a long run, allowing Haley
to score the last Red Sox run. |
