“DIARY OF A WINNER”

April 25, 1915 ... Nearly 1500 people were present at the first dance and concert of the Hooper Outing Club in Convention Hall on St. Botolph Street in Boston.  A concert was followed by a grand march and a dance.  The grand march was led by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hooper.  They were followed by the officers of the club and many members of the Red Sox and their partners.  The concert featured the Daly Trio and the Zola Sisters.  The Hooper Outing and Athletic Club song was introduced.

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The
Athletics never have a chance in a
great game for Heinie Wagner

April 26, 1915 ... The Red Sox put up a superb all-around game with Philadelphia and romped home to a  shortened 9-2 win.  It was announced before the game that no new inning would start after 4:30 so the Athletics could catch their train to Washington at Back Bay Station. It was 4:14 at the close of the seventh inning, but just as the Athletics came up to bat, a shower began and Umpire Chill called the game.

The Red Sox took a commanding lead early in the game on some sharp hitting by Harry Hooper, Heinie Wagner, Del Gainor and Everett Scott, and increased their lead as the game went on, as a result of some erratic pitching by the Philadelphia pitchers, and a second timely hit by Wagner.

Connie Mack started Chick Davies who was knocked out in the third inning.  The work of the Philly pitchers was not good as the Red Sox hit them all very freely and passed seven men. Besides allowing seven timely hits, including a triple by Gainor that practically put the game on ice.

The hitting and fielding of Heinie Wagner was the brightest feature of the game, as he drove home timely runs and sparkled in the field.  He had two hits, with 5 RBI.  His comeback is proving to be one of the sensations of the early season.  Babe Ruth made his first start for the Red Sox and made a good showing, passing only two men.

In the second inning, the Athletics had a chance to take a good lead. Lajoie opened with a two base drive against the left-field fence and Stuffy McInnis was safe when and Hal Janvrin booted his ground ball. Jack Barry singled to left to score Lajoie and McInnis tried to score on a short passed ball, but was thrown out at the plate, by Carrigan to Ruth. Ruth got the next batter on strikes and the last batter grounded out to first, but the Athletics were up 1 to 0.

In the third inning, Ruth drew a base on balls and went to third on a single by Harry Hooper to center. Hooper went to second on Otis Strunk's throw to third. Wagner's single to left scored both Ruth and Hooper, to make it 2 to 1. After Tris Speaker flew out to center, Duffy Lewis drew a walk, signaling the end for Davies. Del Gainer was up next and smashed the ball over Strunk's head, in center, for three bases, scoring Wagner and Lewis. Everett Scott scored Gainor with the fifth run of the inning on a single to right, but was thrown out trying for second. The inning ended when Janvrin was called out on strikes.

The Sox scored another run in the fourth with two outs. Hooper reached first on an error and stole second, scoring on a single by Wagner. Then in the fifth inning, with one out Gainor, Scott and Janvrin all reached base on free passes. Carrigan lined a drive to deep center allowing Gainor to score. Ruth struck out to end the inning, but the Red Sox were up now 7 to 1.

The Athletics scored one run in the sixth, but in the bottom of the inning, the Red Sox added two more. Hooper drew a pass and scored when Wagner laid down a sacrifice bunt, that was thrown over McInnis' head at first. Wagner then scored on Duffy Lewis' fly ball to centerfield, to give the Sox nine runs.

Heinie Wagner's play was thoroughly enjoyed by the fans and his comeback is certainly one of the big sensations of the season.
