WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Red Sox beat the Tigers again

May 13, 1915 ... The Red Sox took another game from the Tigers, this one by a 4 to 2 score. The Tigers sent Bernie Boland to the mound, who had suffered only one loss this spring, to oppose Dutch Leonard.  Boland retired the Red Sox without a hit in five of the seven innings he pitched, but the Sox got three of those hits in the first inning and they accounted for seven bases.  Pug Cavet replaced Boland and allowed the Sox just one run and two hits in the ninth inning.

Boland's support in the field was not that great.  The box score shows only one error, but several poor plays had much to do with the final result.

Leonard, on the other hand, was backed by solid defensive play and he also had a way of striking out a batter with men on base, to get the final out of an inning.  The Tigers got six hits off Leonard but they were scattered through six innings.  Leonard issued Ty Cobb's two passes and they both accounted for the only two runs they succeeded in getting across the plate to tie the game.

The Sox scored twice in the first inning. Heinie Wagner poked a line drive over third base for a double, followed by a line drive down the first base line by Tris Speaker, scoring Wagner.  Speaker scored the second run when Dick Hoblitzell tripled to the right field bleachers.

The Tigers got one run back in the bottom of the first, when, with Ty Cobb got to first via a free pass,  Sam Crawford then lined a ball at Leonard that bounced off him and rolled all the way to the right field fence, allowing Cobb to score with Crawford ending up on third, before the ball was chased down. Detroit scored another run to tie up the game in the fourth inning. Cobb drew another pass and stole second, scoring on Bobby Veach's base hit.

But the Red Sox went ahead to stay in the seventh inning.  Duffy Lewis reached on an error and went to second on a sacrifice bunt.  He scored on Everett Scott's single to center.

Despite the lack of transportation to Navin Field today because of a subway strike that started this morning, over 4000 fans were at the game.  The bleachers were full of many people who, without having a way to get to work, just took the day off.
