“DIARY OF A WINNER”

DICK HOBLITZELL

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Red Sox throw the game away

June 8, 1915 ... The White Sox managed to break even in the series by winning this game by a score of 4 to 3. The Red Sox had the game well in hand for six innings by a score of 3 to 1, but in the seventh, the Red Sox committed some errors and as a result the game was tied.

A bad fumble by Larry Gardner and a wild throw to third by Carl Mays let the White Sox tie up the game. Then in the eighth-inning, Mays presented the White Sox with the winning run, by passing a man and allowing him to reach second on a wild pickoff throw to first.

The Red Sox couldn't score with men on base and Del Gainer was the only man who brought home a run. Two times Harry Hooper had men on first and second with none out and tried to sacrifice them over but failed. Dick Hoblitzell hit a beautiful home run that rolled all the way to the flagpole in deep center, and also had a single and a double.

The White Sox scored their first run in the third inning on a single and a triple by Buck Weaver. The Red Sox then took the lead in their half of the inning on singles by Pinch Thomas and Hooper, a pass tp Olaf Henriksen and a single to center by Gainer.

Chicago got a man on in the fifth inning, but he never passed second. Hoblitzell hit his home run in the sixth to give the Red Sox a 3 to 1 lead, but in the seventh Eddie Collins opened with a double to left and Ray Schalk hit a ground ball to Gardner, who fumbled it allowing him to get the first. Lena Blackburne bunted one past Mays, who ran after it, picked it up and threw wildly to third, after the runner had already reached the base. The ball bounced up against the front of the grandstand and rolled down to left-field where Duffy Lewis picked it up and threw it over the catcher's head, allowing two runs to come in and tie the game.

The Red Sox had a fine chance in their half of the inning when Scott reached first and Mays got a scratch single. But Hooper hit the ball to Collins for a doubleplay and Janvrin flied out to left. Chicago scored the winning run in the eighth when Eddie Collins was passed, went to second on a wild throw to first by Mays, trying to hold him on, and scored on a single by Jimmy Collins.

Hoblitzell doubled in the bottom half of the ninth inning and Thomas drew a pass, but Hooper closed the game with a pop fly to left and Chicago was handed an ugly win.
