“DIARY OF A WINNER”

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Tigers clobber the Red Sox

June 9, 1915 ... The Detroit Tigers gave a grand exhibition of all around baseball at Fenway before nearly 10,000 spectators. The Red Sox were there too, but gave little evidence of their presence, for the fans could see little else then flying Tigers running around the bases for two hours. The Tigers drew passes and slammed the ball all over the park before the score was 15 to 0 in their favor.

The Red Sox managed to get four men as far as second base and received the worst beating any club has had at Fenway Park. It seems incredible after the fine showing the Red Sox made when they last met the Tigers and beat them three straight.

Ray Collins was the starter and has not been able to finish a game this season. Herb Pennock came in to relieve him and looked even worse. Both of them were wild and did not have anything on the ball. Collins was hit hard and allowed the Tigers to run the bases as they like. In one inning, Ty Cobb stole third and then stole home. One time Oscar Vitt and Cobb stole second and third, while Pennock stood on the mound just holding the ball. Bill Carrigan however, did get Cobb trying to steal second and also trying to steal third.

Cobb spiked Everett Scott in the first inning and knocked him out of the game. As Cobb was stealing second, Carrigan threw the ball high and wide and Scotty took it with a one-handed reach, getting Cobb, but in the mix up was spiked rather severely just above his instep.

Tris Speaker was back in the game but was far from being right either and his fielding nor his batting. Harry Hooper limped around the field for several innings and then gave way to Olaf Henriksen and Del Gainer was on the field for the last two innings only.

The Tigers hit line drives for extra bases and slugged the ball all over the Park. Cobb knocked out three singles and Sam Crawford had a pair of doubles. Bobby Veach had the best day at the plate however, with two singles and two doubles in five times up. Marty Kavanaugh got in three triples to the centerfield fence.

Hooks Dauss pitched a clever game for six innings and gave way to Bill Steen, who pitched in his first game for the Tigers after coming over from Cleveland.
