WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The scrappy Tigers are out-fought
by the Red Sox

June 10, 1915 ... In a tightly fought game at Fenway, the Red Sox downed the Detroit Tigers by a score of 6 to 5, much to the delight of the 7000 fans. The Tigers worked every point possible, using four pitchers and two catchers, while the Red Sox used three pitchers, two catchers and made several changes in the lineup throughout the game. The game was full of thrills, close plays on the bases and pitchers who were anxious to get everything possible, working against the batters.

Ernie Shore worked four innings for the Red Sox and a part of the fifth, getting off very lucky because he had terrible control and could have given up more runs than he did. Dutch Leonard came in and took Shore's place in the fifth inning and did fairly well until the seventh inning when the Tigers got to him for three base hits and took the lead. Joe Wood came in and pitched the last two innings, holding Detroit to no runs and saving the day for his teammates.

After playing three innings in centerfield and getting two hits and scoring two runs, Del Gainer was taken out of the lineup and replaced by Olaf Henriksen, who went to right while Tris Speaker took over in center field.

Duffy Lewis pulled off one of the most sensational plays seen this year. In the seventh inning, Ossie Vitt drove the ball close to the bank in left-center. Lewis ran after it as quickly as he could and just on the edge of the bank reached out his left hand, grabbed the ball and then stumbling up the hill. He managed to recover and toss the ball to Speaker while he lay sprawling on the incline. Lewis also had a strong day at the plate with a single in the first inning and a triple in the third, driving home three runs.

For the Tigers, Ty Cobb again displayed some great batting and baserunning. He started off the first inning with a single, stole second and because Hal Janvrin failed to cover the base on Hick Cady's perfect throw down, scampered over to third, rounding the bag with a full head of steam and heading home, only to be nailed by a whisker on a perfect throw from Wagner to Cady.

Cobb then scored in the fifth inning on a single and a stolen base. He made it to third when Larry Gardner dropped the throw from Cady and scored on Sam Crawford's single. Then in the seventh inning Cobb tied the score on a single, went to second on a balk by Leonard and scored on a double by Crawford.

The Red Sox took the lead in the first inning when Gainer singled and went to second on Wagner's sacrifice. He scored on a line drive single over second by Duffy Lewis. The Tigers came back and tied the score in the third on a single and a wild throw to first by Shore, who then gave a free pass to Donie Bush to fill the bases and allowed Oscar Vitt to bring home a run with a base hit.

In the third inning, the Red Sox took the lead and scored three runs off starter Harry Coveleski. Gainer led off with a single and went to second on Wagner's ground ball out. He made it to third on Tris Speaker's single and scored when Lewis lined a triple to centerfield. Lewis then came home and scored the third run of the inning on a single by Dick Hoblitzell.

Now down 4 to 1, the Tigers chipped away at the lead. In the fourth inning, Shore got into trouble again passing Bobby Veach, Ralph Young and Red McKee to fill the bases. Veach scored on a ground ball to Heinie Wagner. The Tigers tied it up in the fifth when Cobb drew a pass, stole second and made third on Gardner's fumble, scoring on a single by Crawford.

At this point Dutch Leonard came in to replace Shore and got the Sox out of the inning. Then in the seventh the Tigers took the lead. Duffy Lewis made the great catch on Vitt before Cobb beat out a grounder to Hal Janvrin. Leonard then stepped out of the box but failed to throw the ball to first and a balk was called on him, sending Cobb down to second. He scored on Crawford's base hit to left. Veach knocked in Crawford with the go-ahead run on a single to right.

Now the Sox were down a run as they came to bat in the bottom of the seventh-inning. Leonard surprised the fans with a sharp single to right and went to second on a bunt by Henriksen. Wagner hit a soft line drive base hit and Leonard was held up at third. Pug Cavet, who was on the mound for Detroit, threw wide trying to catch Wagner off the bag at first, allowing Leonard to score and Wagner to scoot over to third-base. Speaker lined a single through second that scored Wagner, making it 6 to 5 for the Sox.

Wood came into pitch the eighth and got out of the inning after letting up two base hits, getting Cobb on a pop fly to right. Then in the ninth, Wood passed Veach and Kavanagh reached on a scratch single. But again Joe got out of the inning on a couple of flyballs.
