WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Rube Foster tames the Tigers

June 11, 1915 ... The Red Sox beat the Tigers by a 4 to 3 score in a game gleaming with interest until last man was out. Hooks Dauss was back on the mound for the Tigers although he had worked in the opening game here and pitched in part of the game two days ago. He was quite effective until the seventh inning when the Red Sox got to him and scored three runs and won the game.

Rube Foster was on the hill for the Red Sox again and did a splendid day's work, although at times he was wild and allowed seven base on balls. He did his best work against the Tigers heavy hitters, Cobb and Crawford. In three times at bat, Cobb flied out to center, hit into a doubleplay with the bases loaded and the third time sent up a weak pop-up. Crawford was unable to get the ball out of the infield and so the two dangerous Tiger bats were more or less neutralized.

The crowd enjoyed every minute of the game, for nothing pleases a Boston fan more than seeing Cobb and get some of his own medicine. In the last inning he stood a few yards from home plate in the warm-up circle, swinging three bats. There were two down and if Ossie Vitt could get on base Cobb with a had a chance to pull out the victory. But Vitt closed the game with a pop up.

The Tigers were the first to score in the third inning when Ralph Young drew a pass. Red McKee was thrown out at first, but Dauss singled to score Young. Heinie Wagner tied up the score when he received a free pass in the bottom of the inning and scored ahead of singles by Tris Speaker and Duffy Lewis.

The Tigers jumped back into the lead in the sixth inning. Vitt was walked and Cobb sent a pop up into the middle of the infield. Three men went after the ball and Foster finally made a great catch, shooting the ball back to first in time to get Vitt who was off the bag, trying to get back. However the ball got by Hoblitzell and Vitt made it around the third, later scoring on a ground ball out to first.

In the bottom of the seventh, down by a run, Hoblitzell slashed a line drive over Cobb's head to the bank in left-center, good for three bases. Janvrin lifted a week fly ball out to Crawford, who caught it and threw home as Hobby tagged up. But the ball broke through McKee and Hobby tied the game. Pinch Thomas followed with a sharp single after two were out and Foster worked a base on balls. Dauss threw a fat one to Olaf Henriksen and he hit it by Cobb to the bank, good for two runs and put the Sox up in front 4 to 2.

It was now clearly a case of holding Detroit in check and Ty Cobb in particular. But in the eighth-inning Cobb led off and Foster couldn't find the plate, walking him on four bad pitches. Cobb took off for second and Crawford tried a hit-and-run but Wagner made a superb running one-handed pick up and got him at first. Veach then slammed a pitch to right-center that scored Cobb and the infield closed up on Kavanaugh who was up next. Foster worked him carefully and struck him out, and the next man hit a weak bouncer back to the mound and was thrown out, leaving Veach at third.

Foster got the Tigers in the ninth to preserve the win. Surprisingly enough, Hoblitzell made three errors at first, which is unlike him. Henriksen got the honors for getting the game-winning hit that clinched the victory.

Everett Scott who was injured when he was spiked by Cobb the other day is not expected back in the lineup for at least two weeks. Harry Hooper was out taking practice and was coaching third base during the game.
