“DIARY OF A WINNER”

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN June 22, 1915 ... The Washington Nationals beat the Red Sox by a 7 to 4 score, in a long and drawn out game at Griffith Park. The Sox hit Washington pitching harder than the Senators did the Sox pitchers, but Washington got their hits when they needed them and the Red Sox did not. Doc Ayers started for Washington and Cal Griffith brought back Jim Shaw in the sixth inning, when the Red Sox started slamming Ayers' pitches easily. Shaw came in was able to locate his pitches precisely and was very effective for the rest of the game, especially with men on base. Larry Gardner played best for the Speed Boys, scoring two runs and coming across with two clean base hits. Bill Carrigan used nine players in addition to three pitchers in two pinch hitters, but all failed when they needed to come through. The Red Sox jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning when Heinie Wagner drew a walk and moved to second base on Speaker's single to right. He crossed the plate on Dick Hoblitzell's double to right-center. Then in the second inning Larry Gardner sent Howie Shanks a long fly ball, which he dropped. Larry pulled up at second base standing, before the ball was returned to the infield. Pinch Thomas's bunt moved him over to third and he scored on Rube Foster's single to right. Wildness by Foster, however, gave Washington the two runs back in the third inning. He passed Ayers, who moved down the second when Danny Moeller skipped one past Hoblitzell at first. Kid Foster laid down a bunt to Gardner, who threw the ball past Hobby, it rolling to the stands and allowing Ayers to score. Moeller also attempted to sneak home, but was tagged out while Foster scampered over to third. He scored a minute later with the tying run when Howie Shanks pulled off a suicide squeeze. Rube Foster dug his own grave in the fifth inning by walking both Ayers and Moeller, the first two men to face him. Kid Foster then shot a single to left to fill the bases and Shanks hit one to right to score one run. That was the afternoon for Rube and Ernie Shore came in to take over. He retired Milan easily, but Chick Gandil slammed a line drive over Janvrin's head that scored two more runners. Gardner open the sixth with a base hit and Thomas laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Kid Foster threw wildly to Morgan at second in an attempt to force Gardner. Larry raced over to third and Henriksen batted for Shore. He hit a ground ball to Morgan to force Thomas at second, but in the process Gardner scored, to cut Washington's lead to one run. After Hooper singled, Griffith decided to bring in Shaw and he retired the side before any further damage could be done. Herb Pennock was brought in to pitch the bottom of the sixth and two runs were slammed off him with a triple and a pair of singles. The Sox threatened in the ninth with Speaker drawing a free pass and Lewis poking a single to center. But Hobby hit into a doubleplay and McBride tossed out of Janvrin to end the game. |
