“DIARY OF A WINNER”

WALTER JOHNSON

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Walter Johnson sends the Sox to third place

June 23, 1915 ... Walter Johnson was a big stumbling block for the Red Sox today when hits were needed. Behind him, the Washington Nationals beat the Speed Boys 5 to 0. Carl Mays was on the mound for the Red Sox and very effective until the seventh inning, when he weakened and six hits produced four runs in two innings. Until the seventh, Washington was only able to get one hit off Mays.

Johnson was hit easily and was often in danger, but always able to pull himself out and kill off the hitters, when he was threatened. He was aided by great fielding from Danny Moeller and Clyde Milan, who robbed the Sox of extra-base hits with great catches. Moeller helped in the third inning, when with one down and Harry Hooper at first, Heinie Wagner sent a low liner into right field. Moeller made a shoestring catch and was able to throw the ball back to Chick Gandil at first, to get Hooper trying to scurry back.

Tris Speaker robbed out of Shanks of a three bagger in the fourth inning by running in toward second base and making a headlong dive catching Shanks low liner.

Hooper and Duffy Lewis got to Johnson for five hits, but got no support from the other members of the batting order. The Sox had no fewer than 11 men left on base in the game.

Washington was the first to score in the fifth inning. Gandil was safe on an error by Dick Hoblitzell, stole second, was sacrificed to third and then stole home off Mays.

A triple by Howie Shanks started Washington's half of the seventh-inning and successive singles by Milan and Gandil accounted for two runs. In the eighth, Johnson helped himself with a double, and singles by Moeller and Gandil, along with a free pass, gave the Nats their last two runs.

Mays was hit on the knee by one of Johnson's pitches in the fourth, and Bill Carrigan had Vaughn Gregg and Ray Collins warming up quickly, but neither was needed as Mays insisted that he was okay.
