“DIARY OF A WINNER”

HARRY HOOPER

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Red Sox and Harry Hooper
hammer three Washington pitchers

June 24, 1915 ... The Red Sox had their hitting bats today and made life miserable for three Washington pitchers, winning this game by a score of 12 to 4. Ray Collins and Joe Boehling were the starters. Collins was hit but was able to weather the storm, while Boehling was taken out in the fourth inning and Jim Shaw, who relieved him, did better. Joe Engel pitched the eighth and ninth and the Red Sox piled up five runs on him.

Harry Hooper continued his torrid hitting, by getting on base six times in his many times at bat, scoring five runs and driving in three. He collected three hits. Hick Cady contributed a double and a pair of singles in five times up. Tris Speaker also had three hits.

Collins, usually effective against the Senators, was hit hard, but able to spread out 11 hits over nine innings. He had great support in the field with only one error being charged to his fielders.

From the time Boehling started the game and walked the first pair of batters who faced him, he was constantly in trouble. Only some lucky breaks saved him from being removed in the first or second inning. The Red Sox got to him in the third however, when Ray Morgan dropped Hooper's fly ball. Hooper stole second and came home on Speaker's single.

The fourth inning saw the Red Sox hang up five runs. Del Gainer started when he shot a single to right and Hal Janvrin bunted him over, but reached first safely when Boehling bobbled the ball. Gardner drew a walk and Cady was purposely walked to fill the bases so Boehling could face Collins. But Collins worked him for a walk to force in Gainer, and Hooper singled to score Janvrin and Cady.

That was it for Boehling, who was replaced by Shaw. He walked Heinie Wagner and then threw a wild pitch, that allowed Collins to romp home. Then Speaker hit a long fly ball that brought home Hooper in with the fifth run of the inning.

Washington got two runs in their half of the inning and one in the fifth, to cut the Sox lead to 6 to 3. But the Speed Boys got another run in the sixth. Collins led off with a single and was forced at second by Hooper. Speaker brought him in with a long double to right-field.

Engle came in the eighth-inning after Shaw was replaced by a pinch-hitter. Cady greeted him by poking a double to center. Engle struck out Collins, but then Hooper singled to score Cady. Wagner lined a safe it to left and Speaker lined one to center, that put Hooper on third. He scored on Duffy Lewis' fly ball to Milan, putting the Sox up 9 to 3.

Then in the ninth, Hal Janvrin opened up with a single and Del Gainer sacrificed him to second. Cady lined one through the box to score Janvrin, and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Collins. Hooper banged the ball off the wall in right, to score Cady, ending up on third with a triple.

Until the fourth inning, not a single Red Sox player had an assist, as the Senators hit all of the pitches Collins offered, into the air. Hal Janvrin made a beautiful play on Chick Gandil in the eighth-inning, racing all the way to the pitcher's mound after Gandil's slow roller. He picked up the ball with one hand and made and off balance throw to Gainer as he was falling over.
