“DIARY OF A WINNER”

BABE RUTH

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Babe Ruth's smash beats the Yankees

June 25, 1915 ... The Red Sox beat the Yankees at Fenway Park by a score of 9 to 5. There were several brilliant plays in the field and timely drives, but it was Babe Ruth who made the hit of the game. In the second inning with two men on, he walloped the ball over the fence into the bleachers in right center. It was only the second time a hit had been driven into that area since the park opened. It was previously done by Frank Schulte, now of the Cubs. The drive by Ruth sent the ball high over the fence into the seats and the fans went wild.

Ray Caldwell started for the Yankees and was taken out in the fourth inning. Bill Donovan, the Yankee manager, pitched the remainder of the game and held the Sox to one run over the last five innings. Ruth was not as effective on the mound as he was at the plate, because he was wild, hit hard, and the longer he went, the worse it was for him.

The Red Sox started by scoring four runs in the second inning. It started with Duffy Lewis' single. Hobby followed with another base hit to center and Hal Janvrin took first base after he was hit by a Ray Caldwell pitch, to fill the bases. Lewis was nailed at the plate on Larry Gardner's grounder, leaving the bases still loaded. Pinch Thomas next hit a grounder to Fritz Maisel at third, who stepped on the bag for the force, and then went after Hobby trying to score. The ball hit Hobby in the back, however, allowing the first Red Sox run. It was then that Ruth hit his mammoth homer, good for three more runs.

In the third inning the Yankees answered with two runs. But the Sox countered with three in the bottom of the inning. Ruth and Hooper were passed and it was then the Donovan came into pitch. Wagner sacrificed them over and Ruth scored on Speaker's long fly ball to right.

New York scored another run in the sixth but the Red Sox scored their ninth run in the seventh inning on a base hit by Speaker, a hit batter and an infield hit by Janvrin, making it 9 to 3.

The Highlanders made a last ditch effort. They scored again in the eighth and scored another run in the ninth. Hugh High led off the ninth with a triple and scored on a double by Roger Peckinpaugh. But Peck died on second when Paddy Baumann grounded out to end the game.

Ruth may have been hit hard while on the mound, but it was very obvious that with proper coaching his best stuff is yet to come. Dutch Leonard is doing light practice, but the club doctor will not allow him to pitch in a game for another 10 days to two weeks. President Joe Lannin had 1500 Boston Elks and members of the Brockton Knights of Columbus as his guests, who awarded him with an award during the game.
