BABE RUTH |
WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Babe Ruth moves the Red Sox on
July 21, 1915
...
The sun set on another Boston victory, this time in St. Louis, 4 to 2. The Red Sox led all the way, but in the ninth inning the Brownies attempted to mount a rally. After a fumble by Heinie Wagner, Babe Ruth, who had pitched an excellent game, started to
unravel. He walked Tillie Walker on four straight pitches and gave up an RBI single to Dee Walsh. Joe Wood made a relief appearance and, after walking Doc Lavan, struck out Ivan Howard and Muddy Ruel to end the game. If not for the ninth inning error and a bad throw from
Harry Hooper, he would have had a shutout. Ruth not only pitched a great game, he was equally immense at the plate. In four times up, he hit for a single, two doubles, and a home run. He hit the longest ball ever seen in this park. The ball went over the right
field bleachers, landing on the far sidewalk across Grand Ave. The crowd was small, and many ballplayers were present, including the Buffalo Blues Federal League team, who had Harry Lord, Hugh Bedient, and Clyde Engel all there pulling for the Sox. |
