JACK BARRY |
WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Walter Johnson throws away the game
August 13, 1915
...
The Red Sox managed to pull out a game given to them by the other team, winning 3 to 2 in the ninth inning. The hitting was light and not a run could have been made with good fielding, as all five runs scored were gifts coming as a result of two
muffs by both catchers, a bad error by shortstop George McBride and a mental mistake by Del Gainor. On the other hand, the Nats centerfielder Clyde Milan made two wonderful catches while the work of secondbaseman Jack Barry was also quite noteworthy for the Sox. Barry accepted 11
chances, going to his left and to his right, charging in, and taking bad hops without a flinch.
Washington lost the game in the ninth inning. With the score knotted at 2-2 going into the bottom of the ninth, Duffy Lewis and Larry Gardner singled. Lewis took third on Gardner's hit. Walter Johnson was then brought in to pitch in relief of Doc
Ayers to face Barry. Down two strikes, Johnson threw the ball a foot wide of the plate past catcher John Henry to the backstop allowing Duffy Lewis to easily score the winning run. |
