WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Red Sox beat the Tigers
in the 13th inning
August 25, 1915
...
The Red Sox brought the Tigers to their knees today in a devastating 13 inning win that took the air out of their balloon. The Tiger fans again worked hard to rattle the Boston players with Ty Cobb leading the band. And again they failed to
get under the collective Boston skin. On the mound was Babe Ruth and he was calm and just looked bored with the antics from the other side. Ruth pitched a smart game and showed a lot of nerve, except in the eight inning. With Donie Bush on second, he went after the dangerous
Bobby Veach rather than pitch around him. Veach lined a ball pitched down the middle, to left bringing in Bush to tie the game. At that point, Dutch Leonard came in and took care of business, retiring Tiger hitters while waiting for his hitters to finish them off. But on the
mound for Detroit was Bill James, pitching quite effectively himself, until he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the ninth inning. The Red Sox and Tigers just battled until the Red Sox broke trough in the 13th inning on a single by Leonard, a sacrifice by Harry Hooper, and a two base hit
by Everett Scott. In the bottom of the thirteenth inning the Tigers refused to quit. Cobb got on and was left at second base when Tris Speaker made a great running catch of Sam Crawford's drive to finish them off. Cobb did not have a good game in that he was thrown out
attempting to steal, and did not hit safely with men on base.
