WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Red Sox beat Detroit in a bitter game
August 24, 1915
...
The whole city of Detroit appeared ready to do battle with the Red Sox and take over first place. The fans were loud, wearing caps. using horns, and police rattles. But Ernie Shore was immune to the roaring crowd and the heckling and pitched
a great game. The Tigers played rough, kicking on every close decision and stopping the game, asking to inspect the ball on numerous occasions. The peak of their frustration happened on an attempted steal of home by Ty Cobb, who met the immovable Hick Cady and went into a rage.
Cobb got up and ran toward the Red Sox dugout looking for a fight, only to be put in his place by manager Bill Carrigan who would not be goaded into something stupid. The Sox players gave Shore tremendous support, with Scott and Barry turning some sensational plays, and Tris Speaker
robbing a home run with an over-the-shoulder catch at the center field fence. The Sox scored three runs in the first inning which incensed the Tigers even more. |
