“DIARY OF A WINNER”

BABE RUTH

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
Babe Ruth knocks off the White Sox
on the mound and at the plate

September 14, 1915 ... The Red Sox made it four straight from the White Sox winning 2 to 1.  Babe Ruth was pretty much the whole show.  He knocked out two of the three Red Sox hits, held the hard hitting White Sox to just two hits, and knocked in the winning run.  With two outs in the seventh inning, the White Sox made three miscues and Babe smashed the ball against the left field fence to send home the winning run.

Ruth had tremendous speed on the mound and fairly good control.  But for a glaring error by Larry Gardner with two outs in the third inning when he let an easy grounder roll through his legs, Babe would have had a shutout.  The one run Chicago scored looked huge in the fact that Joe Benz was also pitching a great game.

Not a man in the Boston first five was able to get a hit and but for a couple of mistakes by Shano Collins, Ruth's game winning hit would not have happened.  Benz, it seemed was the only Chicago man who wanted to win, with the wind knocked out of his team's sails by three consecutive losses to the Red Sox, and slipping out of the pennant race.

Owing to the injury to Jack Barry's foot, Heinie Wagner played second base, made a sensational stop that saved the Red Sox a run in the fifth inning, and had the other Boston hit.
