Carl Mays beats the helpless White Sox
June 12, 1918 ...
Carl Mays stood the Chicago White Sox and on their heads, so to speak, in the game here this afternoon at Comiskey Park. Only three widely scattered hits were made off him, winning the game 7 to 0 in the third game of the series.
Dave Danforth, who started the game for the White Sox, lasted only two innings and retired after a barrage of hits that scored two runs. Joe Benz took up the task, in the third inning and went well for four innings, only to be be assaulted for three hits and two runs in
the seventh inning. Mel Wolfgang was trotted out and he got by fine in the eighth inning, but gave up three runs in the ninth, with the assistance of a boot by Eddie Collins.
Thirteen hits were rolled up by the Red Sox and three were for extra bases. Mays helped his own cause with a triple, which was the determining factor in the two runs scored in the second inning. He also delivered a pair of sacrifice hits that helped in the
subsequent innings. Harry Hooper lined four safe hits, including a triple in five times at bat.
Chicago was helpless against Mays. Only three players reached second base and only one of them saw third. |
